Meet the Winemaker
Miles’ wine foundation was laid early on in his life. He is the son of Kathy and the late Tony Mossop, a Cape Wine Master and distinguished South African wine authority. After graduating with a BSc in Geology, thereby setting his foundation for understanding terroir, Miles went on to complete a further degree in Viticulture and Enology at Stellenbosch University, graduating “top of class” in 1998. Miles worked harvests with the legendary Gyles Webb at Thelema and Eben Sadie at Spice Route before stirring the lees as far afield as Knappstein in the Clare Valley and Far Niente in Napa. This first-rate experience, obtained in such a short space of time, brought him to the attention of GT Ferreira and he was appointed winemaker to the fledgling winery, Tokara, in 2000 – and as they say, the rest is history.
A string of awards straight of bat, including Best White Wine SAA 2003 and Veritas Double Gold for the maiden Tokara Red 2003, set Tokara’s upward trajectory. Miles has gone on to achieve the sought after Five Stars in the Platter Wine Guide an incredible five times for Tokara and in the most recent 2012 edition the superb Max 2008 triumphed too. Wine Magazine applauded Saskia 2008 with a coveted Five Stars inducting Miles Mossop Wines into an elite group of achievers. As a favourite of Robert Parker, with a remarkable 94 points for both Kika 2009 and Tokara Director’s Reserve Red 2007, it shows that Miles’ stylistic interpretation of fine wine is appreciated across the globe.
Miles married Samantha Fuchs in 2001 and together they have made their dreams of a family and successful wine business a reality. Miles is passionate about surfing, wine and family (not particularly in that order).
