Since my last communication we were just heading into a relaxation of the first round of Covid 19 related liquor prohibition in South Africa.
I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of you for supporting our industry through this very difficult time. It is not only us, the wine brand and farm owners, you are supporting but more importantly the livelihoods of all of those in the value chain of producing a bottle of wine and their families.
We now find ourselves in a second round of an alcohol distribution ban which is now in its fifth week. Although we are starting to see a push to reopen the sale of liquor soon. Lets hope they do allow it.
Yet production moves on and we have recently completed the blending of the 2019 red wines which are looking awesome even though it was a tricky harvest. We are busy preparing to bottle the 2020 Kika which is a smaller volume that 2019 due to lower levels of Botrytis infection and having to wait so long for the botrytis infection to kick in, picking the last fruit for this on the 28th May.
Vineyard pruning and winter practices are underway and with the early cold followed by some warmer weather have started seeing some vines starting to bud extremely early. This could prove to be problematic depending on how the remainder of the winter goes and early spring pans out.
The last of the Chapters 2019 wines is now out along with the new vintage of The Introduction Chenin blanc.
2019 Chapter Two, Swartland Cinsault
Only 1990 bottles produced. This is made from a single vineyard site in the Swartland. A 22-year-old block of unirrigated bushvines growing in decomposed granite Oakleaf/Clovelly soils. Fermented naturally with 60% whole bunches included in the tank. One month total maceration before being pressed to old barrels for maturation for a total 9 months. Flavours of concentrated blackcurrant and red berry fruits burst onto the palate with undertones dried Italian herbs and white pepper spice. The palate is dry with fine grained emery paper tannins on the finish.
2019 The Introduction Chenin blanc
Being part of The Introduction range, this wine is meant for earlier drinking but don’t be fooled into thinking this is anything but a serious wine. Produced from fruit sourced in both Stellenbosch and Swartland from old bushvines, this wine is blended to bring you the best of both these areas. Ripe yellow fruit richness from the heavier soils of Stellenbosch and more lime, pithy zesty notes from the lighter textured Swartland soils. The wine is fermented in older 400L French oak barrels and matured for up to 9 months in barrel before being bottled. Packed with aromas of white peach, quince and lemon zest with a hint of roasted almonds. The wine enters the palate clean and fresh with flavours of citrus and stone fruits leading to a clean and textured finish with stunning freshness.
With possibility that the prohibition on liquor sales will be lifted quite soon as well as one’s personal stocks being quite low. Why not take the opportunity to make sure you have stock orders and secure ready to be dispatched as soon as the ban is lifted? You can order the newly released 2019 Chapter One & 2019 The Introduction Chenin blanc along with all our other available wines on our website.
We will process your order and keep your wine safe and ready for dispatch as soon as the ban is lifted.
I plan to do an online tasting of these 2 wines over the next week so stay tuned to social media and a follow up newsletter.
