The 2021 Harvest has kicked off!

Last Thursday, the 28th January, we picked our first grapes of 2021. Verdehlo from the Paardeberg in the Swartland. Verdehlo is a Portuguese variety which I use in the Saskia blend. It has amazing acidity and vibrant citrus and yellow fruit characters. The harvest has started later than usual, 12 days later than last year. This is due to the late spring we experienced and relatively cool and wet spring and early summer.
It was a challenging season for the growers with excessive growth in the vineyards and a need to stay on top of weed and disease control. Those farmers who have managed these practices well will reap the rewards in great quality fruit and good crop levels.
The fruit quality looks absolutely stunning so far with tiny berries, even ripeness, intensely concentrated flavours and vibrant acidity. Let’s hope the rest of the fruit coming in follows the same trend!

Wine Ban 3.0
We are hopefully coming to the end of our third liquor ban since the beginning of the Covid 19 pandemic.
This is having a devastating impact on not only us as wine producers and our staff but all businesses and ultimately their employees and dependants in the Liquor industry value chain.

We were seeing a good recovery in the retail and restaurant trade after the initial two liquor bans which ended in August 2020 but who knows what the ultimate impact will be after this third ban.

We are hopeful that the ban will be lifted quite soon, 15 February at the latest.
