What a crazy year it has been!

The year is rapidly coming to a close. We have just finished bottling the 2019 red wines and the 2020 whites and Cinsualt and we are looking forward to a short break before the harvest starts in January 2021. The growing season has been quite challenging with a great deal of moisture and humidity contributing to a lot of growth in the vineyards as well as disease pressure. This has generally resulted in a great deal of additional work needing to take place in the vineyards to open up the canopies and allow for better airflow and light penetration. The crops generally look good and if we have favourable conditions over the next couple of months we could be in for a really good season.

For those of you lucky enough to be in the Stellenbosch area over the festive season, I have partnered with a small wine bar in Stellenbosch, Love Wine Studio at 3 Andringa Street in the centre of the town. You will be able to order most of my wines by the glass, do tastings a s well as purchase a bottle or two to take away with you. For a Miles Mossop Wines focused tasting you would have to book in advance on 060 622 5977 or 082 4134335. There is a tasting fee applicable.

We have had a great showing in the latest Platter’s Wine Guide 2021. All our wines achieving 4 star ratings and above with one 5 star rating for our Cape Winemakers Guild 2021 auction wine, Saskia-Jo 2018. The family wines Saskia 2018, Max 2017, Kika 2019 and Sam 2017 all receiving 4 ½ stars in the guide.

Saskia 2018

Produced during the last of the “drought years”. Although we had had numerous dry winters preceding this vintage, we had a relatively cool growing season running up to the 2018 vintage. The grapes for the Saskia are harvested in Mid-January to Mid-February which was before any serious prolonged heat was experienced allowing the vines to ripen the grapes in relatively cool conditions. This resulted in wines of exceptional finesse and balance with great acidities. A blend of 63% Chenin blanc, 13% Viognier, 9% Clairette blanche, 6% Verdehlo and 4% Grenache blanc. This is the first year we have brought Grenache blanc into the blend and it is showing great promise. The grapes originate from the Paardeberg Mountain in the Paarl and the Swartland regions. Another new development in the making of this wine is the use of a concrete egg for fermentation and maturation for a portion of the wine. The individual components are fermented and matured separately, 80% in 400L barrels (14% being New) and 20% in Concrete Egg. The wine is blended after 10 months maturation and was bottled in December 2018. We only produced 3460 bottles of this vintage.

Max 2017

This was also produced during the “drought years” and has been proclaimed by some as one of the best vintages in this millennium in South Africa. The conditions during the growing season and during harvest were as close to perfect as you could get. The growth in the vineyard was contained due to the dry winter and minimal rain during the growing season. The crops were moderate, the conditions during flowering resulted in good berry set which resulted in small uniform berries. We had moderate to warm days during ripening with no excessive periods of heat and relatively cool nights. This resulted in great colour, flavour and tannin development especially in the reds around Stellenbosch. A blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 21% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet franc from vineyards from various parts of Stellenbosch, mostly unirrigated and all low yielding. This is the first year we have used Cabernet franc in the blend which was added amazing focus, spice and freshness to the wine. The wine was matured for 22 months in small French oak barriques, of which 37% was new.

The wine was bottled in January 2019.
